How to Prevent Roof Condensation
Roof condensation is generally considered a tricky problem. It often looks like a leak, with “sweating” walls and running water inside your home. But when you look for the source, it’s likely that you won’t find any physical damage to your roof.
That’s why you should hire a roofing professional to conduct a proper roof inspection. This is the best way to confirm if the issue involves leaks or condensation problems. If it’s either, you need to take steps to correct it, but it’s important to understand how condensation forms and what you can do about it.
Causes
Roof condensation usually occurs in winter and early spring when temperatures are cool. What happens here is that the cold air and water on your roof comes into contact with the hot air in your attic and roof spaces. Since warm air has moisture, the moisture then condenses on the inner roof surfaces when it comes into contact with cooler temperatures.
This resulting problem is often due to improperly installed insulation. When there’s too much insulation, it tends to trap warm air near the roof, causing condensation. It can be a long time before you notice this problem. But with regular roof inspections, you might be able to catch the issue and carry out roof repair before it’s too late.
Wall and wood damage is also another common cause of roof condensation. When the wooden supports of your roof get wet, they naturally become compromised. This can later on result in sagging rooftops as well as mold or pest infestation.
Prevention
The main preventive measure for roof condensation is maintaining proper ventilation in your roof and attic area. Ensure that this part of your home is protected from water infiltration and there is natural air circulation. Generally, at least one square foot of venting per 300 square feet of attic floor space is recommended. An even split of ridge and roof vents also enables natural wind movement that pulls warm air from the attic as intake vents bring in new air.
