What to Do if You Find Your Roof Is Leaking

Discovering a leak in your roof can be stressful, especially as the seasons change from summer to the rainy season. Leaks often go unnoticed until a heavy downpour exposes them, leaving you scrambling to prevent further damage to your home. While the situation may seem overwhelming, there are steps you can take immediately to reduce the impact. From short-term remediation to long-term solutions, here’s what to do if you find your roof is leaking and why it’s crucial to contact Pressure Point Roofing as soon as possible.

Immediate Steps for Roof Leak Remediation

Discovering your roof is leaking is distressing. Take a deep breath and follow our easy steps for immediate remediation to limit damages and loss.

1. Protect Your Belongings

Once you notice a leak, your first priority should be to protect anything that water could damage. Move furniture, electronics, and valuable items away from the area where water is entering your home. If possible, place buckets or containers under the leak to catch the water and minimize damage to your floors.

2. Minimize Water Spread

Water from a roof leak can spread quickly, so taking steps to contain it is essential. After placing a bucket or container under the leak, lay down towels or tarps to catch any splashing. If the ceiling starts to bubble or sag, it’s better to poke a small hole to release the water and prevent the area from collapsing. This controlled release allows you to manage the water flow more effectively.

3. Identify the Source of the Leak

While waiting for a roofing professional to arrive, try to identify the general area where the leak is coming from. Roof leaks are often deceptive, and the water you see entering your home may have traveled from another area. Water may travel along a pipe or beam, causing the drip to be far from the actual cause. Checking your attic for signs of water entry can help locate the source more precisely. However, be cautious not to get too close to the leak to avoid injury or further damage.

4. Temporary Patch

If you are comfortable doing so and it’s safe, you can apply a temporary patch. Roofing tape or a tarp can provide short-term protection from rain until professionals can make permanent repairs. Be sure to take necessary safety precautions, especially if you’re climbing onto your roof. If there’s any doubt, it’s better to wait for an expert.

Contact Pressure Point Roofing Immediately if Your Roof is Leaking

Once you’ve taken steps to minimize damage, it’s critical to contact a professional roofing company like Pressure Point Roofing as soon as possible. A roof leak is not something to delay repairing. The longer water is allowed to seep into your home, the greater the chance of structural damage, mold, and compromised insulation. Pressure Point Roofing has the expertise and equipment to assess the situation quickly, provide a thorough inspection, and recommend the best course of action.

Pressure Point Roofing’s team can identify the exact source of the leak and determine whether it’s a minor repair or a more significant issue. Often, roof leaks are symptoms of deeper problems such as aging materials, faulty flashing, or poor drainage systems. By addressing these issues early, you can prevent costly repairs down the road and ensure your home is protected throughout the rainy season.

Contacting Your Insurance Company

In many cases, roof leaks are covered by homeowners’ insurance, especially if the damage is caused by a storm, fallen tree, or other sudden event. However, it’s essential to document everything from the moment you discover the leak. Take pictures of the damage, save receipts for any emergency repairs, and note the time and date you first noticed the problem.

When you contact your insurance company, provide them with all the necessary information, including details from Pressure Point Roofing’s inspection. Pressure Point Roofing can help you navigate the claims process by providing detailed reports and estimates, ensuring you get the coverage you need to fix the issue. Coordination between your insurance company and your roofing contractor can streamline the process and reduce the burden on you as a homeowner.

Common Reasons Roofs Start Leaking in the Rainy Season

As we transition from summer to the rainy season, roofs are put to the test after months of dry weather. Here are some common reasons why your roof might start leaking during this time:

1. Worn-out or Missing Shingles

Extreme heat during summer can cause shingles to crack, curl, or even fall off, leaving gaps where water can enter. Without proper protection, your roof is vulnerable to leaks during the season’s first heavy rain.

2. Clogged Gutters

Over the summer, leaves, twigs, and debris can accumulate in your gutters. If gutters aren’t cleaned before the rainy season begins, water can back up and overflow, eventually seeping into your roof’s structure.

3. Faulty Flashing

Flashing seals the joints where different parts of your roof meet, such as around chimneys or skylights. Over time, flashing can crack or peel away, allowing water to enter through these weak points. Pressure Point Roofing can check these vulnerable areas during their inspection.

4. Age of the Roof

Even with regular maintenance, roofs eventually wear out. If your roof is older and has not been replaced in the past 20 to 30 years, it’s more prone to leaks as the materials deteriorate. A professional inspection will reveal whether your roof is nearing the end of its lifespan and needs replacement.

5. Poor Ventilation

Inadequate attic ventilation can cause moisture to build up under your roof, leading to warping and eventual leaks. Proper airflow is essential to prevent damage from inside your home, particularly during seasons with fluctuating temperatures.

I just wanna give a shout out to one of your guys who jumped out of vehicle to help me push my van out from 62 onto coker Butte this morning awesome job and thank you so much..

No hassles, no stress roofing contractor.

We've worked with a number of contractors over the years doing home improvement projects and I can say that, without question, working with Pressure Point was about as easy as it gets.

Everything about the project, from sales all the way to final inspection, went like clockwork and without a hitch.  They delivered more than they promised, on time and within budget.   We could not have been happier with their personnel, products and services.  Highly recommended!

I've changed my review from a 1 star to a 4 stars. Matt Stone got right on a pretty poor job done installing a skylight. He had his guys remove the skylight, move it, repair the roof and inside ceiling to its original state, paint it, repair some external trim that was damaged, and all within a few days after talking to him about the multiple problems. It was really an eyesore from the inside. I'd give a 5 star if this had been done well the first time. The skylight just didn't fit the space I first wanted it and was told it would. More communication about the potential problems might have allowed this to be done right the first time. But, Pressure Point Roofing gets 5 starts for making amends and correcting a pretty ugly problem, very fast! Thank you.

I needed someone to come out to take a look at a leaky roof. I contacted Pressure Point Roofing, Inc. and they came out the same day. They gave me a quote to fix the problem and I agreed to their terms. It was about 4PM and I knew they closed at 5PM but they stayed and fixed the leak at no additional cost. I was very happy and impressed. Would recommend them to anyone. Thank you Pressure Point Roofing for earning our families trust. Will definitely be doing business with you again.

Wouldn't be good if I didn't think the best of my own company right?!

Matt Stone

I am so happy I chose Pressure Point to replace my 40-year-old roof.  The crew was professional, efficient, and answered all my questions, addressed the few concerns I raised, and made me feel comfortable, trusting them with such a big project.  I couldn't be happier with their work and the look of my new roof.
