The Importance of House Wraps
Not a lot of homeowners are aware of what house wraps are and how they function. Our team gets often asked about them, especially when they have their new siding installed. One particular question even revolves around whether or not they’re necessary.
In this post, Pressure Point Roofing, Inc. provides an overview of what a house wrap is, its function, and why it might be a vital addition to your home.
Understanding House Wraps
Think of a house wrap as a protective blanket for your home. Made of fabric, paper or board, it is installed on your home’s exterior walls first before the siding. It is similar to the underlayment of a residential roofing system in that it protects against water infiltration and its damaging effects.
It’s worth noting that a house wrap is used primarily as a water-resistive barrier. This means that it’s neither impermeable nor waterproof. Should moisture penetrate through the siding material and into the house wrap, the wall will release the moisture, minimizing damage to the exterior wall.
Does Your Home Need One?
A house wrap may not be necessary if the installer finds that it is still intact upon removal of the old siding material during installation. New siding installations, meanwhile, don’t usually require a barrier between the siding and exterior wall, although building codes in certain jurisdictions may require adding house wrap. If it has been determined that your home has been beset with recurring water intrusion through the siding, having a house wrap installed makes for a great investment.
