Why Add a Skylight to Your Grants Pass Home?

Living in Grants Pass means enjoying Southern Oregon’s beauty, but winter months can make homes feel dark and gloomy. Skylights and sun tunnels are the solution, bringing natural light into your living space regardless of the weather. A new skylight installation in grants pass or transforms dark rooms into bright, welcoming spaces you’ll love to be in.

The benefits go beyond aesthetics. Skylights flood your home with natural sunlight, reducing your reliance on artificial lighting and lowering energy bills. Rooms filled with natural light feel more spacious, comfortable, and connected to the outdoors. It’s an upgrade that improves daily life while making your home more efficient and valuable.

We’ve seen the difference skylights make for Grants Pass homeowners. For more details, see The Benefits of Skylights and 5 Advantages of Installing Skylights.

Boost Your Home’s Energy Efficiency

Skylights can save you money. By bringing natural light into your Grants Pass home, you’ll use less artificial lighting during the day, and these savings add up over time.

Another energy benefit valuable in Southern Oregon is passive solar heating. During cooler months, sunlight streaming through your skylight naturally warms your home, reducing the load on your heating system and lowering your heating bill.

Modern skylights use low-E coatings and advanced glazing to manage heat transfer, so you don’t have to worry about your home getting too hot in the summer. You get beautiful natural light without the unwanted heat. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 20%.

A poorly sealed skylight can negate these benefits, which is why professional installation is crucial. It ensures your skylight saves you money, rather than costing you. For more on performance and features, check out What You Need to Know About Skylights.

Improve Well-being and Home Ambiance

Beyond energy savings, a new skylight installation in grants pass or significantly improves how you feel in your home. Natural light positively affects our health and mood in measurable ways.

Natural light helps regulate your body’s internal clock for better sleep and more energy. It boosts Vitamin D production, supporting bone health and immune function. During long, gray Southern Oregon winters, the extra light is a genuine mood lifter, bringing the feeling of a sunny day indoors.

Skylights also transform a room’s feel. They make spaces appear larger and more open by drawing the eye upward. A cramped room can feel spacious, and a dark hallway becomes bright and welcoming. Even bathrooms, closets, and laundry rooms become more pleasant with a skylight or sun tunnel.

Skylights also provide a connection to the outdoors. You can watch clouds drift by or stargaze at night, making your home feel more a part of the natural world around you.

We believe homes filled with natural light are better places to live. To weigh the advantages and considerations, see The Pros and Cons of Installing Skylights.

Choosing Your Daylighting Solution: Skylights vs. Sun Tunnels

When you’re ready to bring more natural light into your Grants Pass home, you’ll face a wonderful choice: traditional skylights or sun tunnels (also called solar tubes). Both options brighten your space beautifully, but they work differently and shine in different situations.

Think of traditional skylights as windows in your roof. They give you that expansive view of the sky above, flooding larger rooms with abundant natural light. Depending on which type you choose, they can also open to let in fresh air. They’re perfect for spaces where you want that direct connection to the outdoors—your living room, kitchen, or bedroom, for instance.

Sun tunnels take a different approach. They use a reflective tube to channel sunlight from your roof down through your attic space, ending with a diffuser in your ceiling. You won’t get a view of the clouds drifting by, but you’ll get bright, diffused light that’s ideal for smaller spaces. They’re particularly brilliant for those interior rooms that don’t have easy access to the roofline or where a full skylight would be too much.

The beauty is that neither option is “better”—they’re simply suited for different needs. A sun tunnel might be perfect for your windowless bathroom, while a large skylight could transform your living room into a sun-drenched haven. For a detailed breakdown of how these options compare, check out our article Skylights vs. Solar Tubes: What to Choose?.

Types of Skylights and Sun Tunnels

Understanding your options helps you make the best choice for your new skylight installation in grants pass or. We work with premium brands like Velux and Andersen because they’ve proven their quality time and again.

Fixed skylights are the straightforward option—they don’t open, they just let in gorgeous natural light. They’re often the most budget-friendly choice and work wonderfully in areas where you’re primarily after brightness rather than ventilation. When properly installed, they offer an unobstructed sky view and excellent leak protection. Many homeowners love them in dining rooms or living spaces where the main goal is creating a bright, open atmosphere.

Ventilating skylights give you the best of both worlds: natural light plus fresh air circulation. These can be opened manually or with an electric motor (many are solar-powered these days). They’re particularly valuable in kitchens where cooking odors linger or bathrooms where moisture accumulates. Some models come with insect screens so you can enjoy fresh air without unwanted visitors, and the newest versions can even integrate with smart home systems to monitor your indoor climate and adjust automatically.

Sun tunnels (or solar tubes) are the compact, efficient solution for bringing daylight to tricky spaces. They consist of a small dome on your roof, a highly reflective tube running through your attic, and a ceiling diffuser that spreads the light evenly throughout the room. While they don’t offer a view, they excel at brightening those dark corners—hallways, laundry rooms, walk-in closets, and interior bathrooms that have always felt a bit cave-like.

Here’s a quick comparison to help you visualize the differences:

Feature Skylights Sun Tunnels
Light Quality Abundant, direct, and often with a sky view Diffused, softer, and consistent
Best Locations Living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, large spaces Hallways, bathrooms, closets, small interior rooms
View of the Sky Yes, clear view No, only diffused light

Where to Install Skylights and Sun Tunnels

The versatility of daylighting solutions is one of their greatest strengths. Over the years, we’ve helped homeowners throughout Grants Pass, Medford, Ashland, and Klamath Falls find the perfect spots to add natural light.

Kitchens come alive with a skylight positioned above your island or main work area. The added brightness makes meal prep more enjoyable and safer, and it creates a welcoming gathering spot for family and friends.

Bathrooms benefit from both options. A skylight provides privacy while flooding the space with light—no more neighbors peeking in when you have a window. For smaller, interior bathrooms without any exterior walls, a sun tunnel works wonders, turning a dim, cramped space into something that feels fresh and open.

Living rooms make a statement with larger skylights. The dramatic influx of natural light creates a stunning focal point that draws the eye upward, making the entire space feel more expansive and inviting. It’s perfect for those cozy evenings or lively family gatherings.

Hallways are often forgotten spaces that stay dim all day. A sun tunnel transforms these passages into well-lit pathways, improving both safety and the overall feel of your home.

Walk-in closets become infinitely more functional with a sun tunnel. No more squinting to match colors or fumbling for the light switch—natural light makes choosing outfits and organizing your wardrobe so much easier.

Home offices benefit tremendously from natural light. Studies consistently show that working in natural light boosts productivity and reduces eye strain. A well-placed skylight can turn your workspace into a place you actually want to spend time in, whether you’re there for a few hours or the full workday.

We love helping homeowners identify the best spots in their homes for daylighting solutions. Whether you’re dreaming of stargazing from your bedroom or simply want to brighten up that perpetually dark laundry room, there’s a solution that fits your space perfectly.

The Process for New Skylight Installation in Grants Pass OR

There’s something truly special about watching a dark room transform into a bright, sun-filled space. That’s what happens during a new skylight installation in grants pass or, and we’re here to walk you through it. Skylight installation is not a DIY project; it involves precise roof cutting, expert flashing, careful attention to structural integrity, and professional interior finishing. One small mistake can lead to leaks, heat loss, or even structural damage.

professional roofer carefully framing a new skylight opening on a roof - new skylight installation in grants pass or

Our team brings together skilled local window and door specialists, experienced glaziers, and seasoned roofers who know Southern Oregon homes. We have the specialized equipment and expertise to retrofit skylights onto existing roofs while maintaining your home’s structural integrity and ensuring a completely leak-free installation. With over 35 years of experience, we’ve perfected our process to deliver professional results that last.

Step 1: Consultation and Planning

Your skylight journey begins with a conversation about your vision. Are you hoping to brighten a dim kitchen, create a focal point in your living room, or fix a dark bathroom?

During our initial discussion, we’ll talk through your needs and preferences. Then we’ll conduct a thorough assessment of your home, evaluating the roof structure, pitch, framing, and sun exposure to determine the best placement for maximum light and energy efficiency.

We’ll guide you through choosing the right product. Should you go with a fixed skylight, a ventilating one, or a sun tunnel? We’ll discuss features like low-E coatings, integrated blinds, and different glazing options. This is your chance to ask every question and get expert answers to make confident decisions.

Step 2: The Quoting and Scheduling Process

Once we’ve landed on the perfect skylight solution, we’ll prepare a detailed proposal outlining all materials, work, and timelines. We believe in complete transparency, so there are no surprises.

After you approve the proposal, we’ll work with your schedule to find the best installation dates. Most new skylight installation in grants pass or projects take just one to two days. We do our best to minimize any inconvenience.

We’ll also let you know about any preparation steps, which usually just means clearing the area directly below where we’ll be working to protect your home and possessions.

Step 3: Installation Day

When our crew arrives, you’ll see why professional expertise matters. We start by carefully protecting your home, laying down coverings to keep everything clean and safe.

The installation unfolds in several coordinated steps. First is roof cutting and framing. Our technicians precisely measure and cut the opening, installing new structural framing to support the skylight and maintain your roof’s integrity. Angled roofs work best for skylights because they allow proper water runoff.

Next is skylight placement and sealing. We carefully position the unit into the prepared opening, using professional-grade sealants to create a completely watertight seal.

Then comes the critical flashing installation. We install a multi-layered flashing system around your skylight that integrates seamlessly with your existing roofing. The flashing directs water away from the opening, preventing leaks even during Southern Oregon’s heaviest rainstorms.

Finally, we complete the interior finishing. Once the exterior is secure, our team finishes the interior shaft with insulation, drywall, and trim work that matches your home’s style. The result looks like it was always meant to be there.

Is It Time for a New Skylight? Signs to Look For

Even the finest skylights don’t last forever. Over time, Southern Oregon’s weather—from summer heat to winter rain—takes its toll. Recognizing the warning signs early can save you from more serious damage and costly repairs down the road.

Water is your first red flag. If you spot water pooling beneath your skylight, or notice discolored patches spreading across your ceiling, you’ve got a leak. Sometimes the unit isn’t sitting flush against the roof, or the weather-stripping and flashing have simply worn out after years of service. Either way, water inside your home is never something to ignore.

Visible damage to the glass is another clear indicator. Cracks in acrylic or glass skylights aren’t just unsightly—they compromise the entire unit’s ability to keep weather out and energy in. If your skylight looks foggy or discolored, especially between the panes, that’s a sign the seal has failed. When double-glazed units lose their seal, the insulating gas escapes, and your energy efficiency plummets.

Condensation between the panes means trouble. A little moisture on the interior surface during temperature changes is normal, but persistent fogging trapped between layers of glass tells you the unit is no longer doing its job. That failed seal is costing you money on your energy bills every single day.

Feeling drafts or temperature extremes? If the room beneath your skylight feels like an icebox in winter or a sauna in summer, or if you can feel air moving around the frame, the insulation or seal has degraded. Modern new skylight installation in grants pass or projects use advanced materials that prevent these issues, but older units simply weren’t built with today’s energy standards in mind.

Age matters, too. A properly installed and maintained skylight typically serves you well for eight to 15 years, though premium models can last much longer—some up to 55 years. If your skylight is approaching that age range, or if it’s been damaged by storms, high winds, or falling debris, replacement might be your smartest move before you’re dealing with emergency repairs.

Outdated skylights also lack modern features like low-E coatings and advanced glazing technology. Upgrading to a new model can dramatically improve both your home’s comfort and your monthly energy bills.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, we’re here to help assess whether repair or replacement makes the most sense for your situation. We also serve the broader region—you can learn more about our repair services at Affordable Skylight Repair in Ashland OR.

Why Professional Help is Crucial for New Skylight Installation in Grants Pass OR

We understand the appeal of tackling home projects yourself. But when it comes to new skylight installation in grants pass or, DIY approaches create more problems than they solve. This isn’t like hanging a picture frame—you’re cutting a hole in your roof, and that comes with serious risks.

Preventing leaks requires expertise you can’t learn from a weekend video. Professional installers bring years of experience in creating watertight seals. We use multi-layered flashing systems that integrate perfectly with your existing roofing materials, channeling water away from the opening no matter how hard it rains. One small mistake in flashing placement, and you’re looking at water damage that spreads through your ceiling, insulation, and walls. The cost of fixing that damage far exceeds what you’d save by going DIY.

Your roof’s structural integrity isn’t something to gamble with. Cutting an opening in your roof means understanding load distribution, proper framing techniques, and how your home’s structure works together. An improperly supported opening can lead to sagging, progressive water damage, or even partial roof collapse over time. Our team knows exactly how to maintain—and often improve—your roof’s structural soundness during installation.

Manufacturer warranties depend on professional installation. Premium brands like Velux and Andersen offer warranties ranging from 20 to 50 years, but they’re only valid when certified professionals handle the installation. Why invest in a quality skylight only to void the warranty by installing it yourself? Beyond the product warranty, we back our work with our own workmanship guarantees, typically lasting five years or more. That’s double protection for your investment.

Working on roofs is genuinely dangerous. Falls are the leading cause of serious injuries in residential construction. Add fragile glass, heavy frames, and the complexity of cutting through roofing materials, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Our team has the training, safety equipment, and insurance to handle every aspect safely. We’ve been doing this for over 35 years—it’s what we do every day.

Choosing professional installation for your new skylight installation in grants pass or means choosing quality that lasts, protection that holds, and peace of mind that’s worth every penny. Your home deserves the best, and frankly, so do you. For more insight into why professional installation matters, read Why You Should Hire Pros to Install Skylights Rather Than DIY.

I just wanna give a shout out to one of your guys who jumped out of vehicle to help me push my van out from 62 onto coker Butte this morning awesome job and thank you so much..

Linda Marie Eppler

No hassles, no stress roofing contractor.

We've worked with a number of contractors over the years doing home improvement projects and I can say that, without question, working with Pressure Point was about as easy as it gets.

Everything about the project, from sales all the way to final inspection, went like clockwork and without a hitch.  They delivered more than they promised, on time and within budget.   We could not have been happier with their personnel, products and services.  Highly recommended!

Steven Belsky

I've changed my review from a 1 star to a 4 stars. Matt Stone got right on a pretty poor job done installing a skylight. He had his guys remove the skylight, move it, repair the roof and inside ceiling to its original state, paint it, repair some external trim that was damaged, and all within a few days after talking to him about the multiple problems. It was really an eyesore from the inside. I'd give a 5 star if this had been done well the first time. The skylight just didn't fit the space I first wanted it and was told it would. More communication about the potential problems might have allowed this to be done right the first time. But, Pressure Point Roofing gets 5 starts for making amends and correcting a pretty ugly problem, very fast! Thank you.

Linda Brown

I needed someone to come out to take a look at a leaky roof. I contacted Pressure Point Roofing, LLC. and they came out the same day. They gave me a quote to fix the problem and I agreed to their terms. It was about 4PM and I knew they closed at 5PM but they stayed and fixed the leak at no additional cost. I was very happy and impressed. Would recommend them to anyone. Thank you Pressure Point Roofing for earning our families trust. Will definitely be doing business with you again.

Dan LePari

Wouldn't be good if I didn't think the best of my own company right?!

Matt Stone

Excellent experience, prompt and professional estimate, showed up on schedule (actually a day early) and did a thorough and complete job. All personnel were professional, polite and great at their jobs. Would recommend to anyone.

Karen Teliantyler-Tyler

I am so happy I chose Pressure Point to replace my 40-year-old roof.  The crew was professional, efficient, and answered all my questions, addressed the few concerns I raised, and made me feel comfortable, trusting them with such a big project.  I couldn't be happier with their work and the look of my new roof.
