Are Asphalt Shingles the Most Durable Roofing Material?

As a homeowner in Oregon, you’re likely wondering: Are asphalt shingles the most durable roofing option for my home? While they’re the most commonly used roofing material in residential neighborhoods, the answer depends on how you define “durable.”

Short answer: Asphalt shingles offer impressive longevity for the cost, but premium materials like metal, tile, or slate can outlast them in the right conditions. Still, when you factor in affordability, versatility, and ease of maintenance, asphalt shingles remain one of the top value roofing choices in Oregon.

How Durable Are Asphalt Shingles?

The lifespan of asphalt shingles depends on several key factors:
– Product quality and material grade
– Proper installation by licensed roofing contractors
– Adequate attic ventilation and insulation
– Oregon’s climate and weather patterns

Modern architectural asphalt shingles (also called dimensional shingles) typically last 25–30 years when installed and maintained correctly. They feature:
– Fiberglass reinforcement for added strength
– Multi-layer design for enhanced wind and hail resistance
– Ceramic granules that block UV rays and prevent early fading

Compared to older three-tab shingles, architectural shingles are more resistant to curling, cracking, and color degradation over time.

Asphalt Shingles vs. Other Roofing Materials

Wondering how asphalt stacks up against other popular roofing options? Here’s a quick breakdown:

Roofing Material Average Lifespan Key Considerations
Asphalt Shingles 25–30 years Affordable, easy to install & repair
Metal Roofing 40–70+ years Higher cost, may require structural support
Clay or Slate Tile 50–100+ years Very heavy, premium cost, excellent longevity

Advancements in Asphalt Shingle Technology

Today’s asphalt shingles are more advanced than ever, thanks to ongoing innovation from leading manufacturers. New features include:
– Impact-resistant materials for better storm protection
– Algae-resistant granules to prevent staining and streaking
– Cool roof technology to reflect sunlight and reduce attic heat
– Improved sealant strips to resist wind uplift

These improvements help asphalt roofs withstand diverse climates, including Oregon’s wet winters and warm summers.

How to Maximize the Life of Your Asphalt Roof

Even the best roofing material needs proper care. Here are five ways to extend the life of your asphalt roof:
1. Schedule regular inspections – especially after major storms.
2. Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent water buildup.
3. Treat moss and algae with manufacturer-approved solutions.
4. Replace damaged shingles promptly to avoid leaks.
5. Ensure proper attic ventilation to reduce moisture and heat stress.

So, Are Asphalt Shingles the Most Durable?

It depends on what you mean by “durable.”

I just wanna give a shout out to one of your guys who jumped out of vehicle to help me push my van out from 62 onto coker Butte this morning awesome job and thank you so much..

No hassles, no stress roofing contractor.

We've worked with a number of contractors over the years doing home improvement projects and I can say that, without question, working with Pressure Point was about as easy as it gets.

Everything about the project, from sales all the way to final inspection, went like clockwork and without a hitch.  They delivered more than they promised, on time and within budget.   We could not have been happier with their personnel, products and services.  Highly recommended!

I've changed my review from a 1 star to a 4 stars. Matt Stone got right on a pretty poor job done installing a skylight. He had his guys remove the skylight, move it, repair the roof and inside ceiling to its original state, paint it, repair some external trim that was damaged, and all within a few days after talking to him about the multiple problems. It was really an eyesore from the inside. I'd give a 5 star if this had been done well the first time. The skylight just didn't fit the space I first wanted it and was told it would. More communication about the potential problems might have allowed this to be done right the first time. But, Pressure Point Roofing gets 5 starts for making amends and correcting a pretty ugly problem, very fast! Thank you.

I needed someone to come out to take a look at a leaky roof. I contacted Pressure Point Roofing, LLC. and they came out the same day. They gave me a quote to fix the problem and I agreed to their terms. It was about 4PM and I knew they closed at 5PM but they stayed and fixed the leak at no additional cost. I was very happy and impressed. Would recommend them to anyone. Thank you Pressure Point Roofing for earning our families trust. Will definitely be doing business with you again.

Wouldn't be good if I didn't think the best of my own company right?!

Matt Stone

Excellent experience, prompt and professional estimate, showed up on schedule (actually a day early) and did a thorough and complete job. All personnel were professional, polite and great at their jobs. Would recommend to anyone.

I am so happy I chose Pressure Point to replace my 40-year-old roof.  The crew was professional, efficient, and answered all my questions, addressed the few concerns I raised, and made me feel comfortable, trusting them with such a big project.  I couldn't be happier with their work and the look of my new roof.
