How Are Old Asphalt Shingles Recycled?

Each year, old asphalt shingles from countless roof replacement projects contribute to a substantial amount of construction and demolition waste. In the past, this debris would likely end up in a landfill, but as the demand for sustainable solutions grows stronger, recycling old shingles has become a practical and environmentally friendly alternative. In this blog post, trusted residential roofing company Pressure Point Roofing, Inc. provides an overview of how asphalt shingles are recycled.

How Are Old Asphalt Shingles Recycled?

The Journey from Roof to Road

Upon removal from a roof, shingles can be repurposed rather than discarded. Shingles can begin their second life by being transported to dedicated recycling centers. These centers divert old shingles from clogging landfills and prepare them for their next use instead.

The recycling process begins with grinding the asphalt shingles into smaller pieces. This is a crucial step to facilitate the shingles’ integration into new materials. The size of the particles is largely determined by their future application; larger chunks may be used for roads’ base layers, while finer particles often go into surface layers.

From Shingles to Pavements

Recycled asphalt shingles from your roof repair or replacement primarily find their new purpose in paving projects, from public roads to driveways and parking lots. The National Asphalt Pavement Association notes the incorporation of reclaimed asphalt shingle material in new pavement mixes, illustrating a growing trend toward utilizing this recycled product. Such use is not only good for the planet but also potentially lowers the costs of infrastructure projects.

The Environmental and Economic Benefits

Recycling asphalt shingles has a dual benefit: it protects the environment and provides economic advantages. Asphalt is a by-product of petroleum, and recycling shingles keeps this non-renewable resource in use longer. Moreover, reusing the material can lead to savings on road repairs and infrastructure development, an advantage that extends to taxpayers and municipalities alike.

Organizations like the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) and industry leaders actively foster the progress of shingle recycling, which is particularly relevant to communities such as Central Point, Oregon. Here, the push for sustainable roofing is part and parcel of the wider environmental efforts championed by various stakeholders.

No hassles, no stress roofing contractor.

We've worked with a number of contractors over the years doing home improvement projects and I can say that, without question, working with Pressure Point was about as easy as it gets.

Everything about the project, from sales all the way to final inspection, went like clockwork and without a hitch.  They delivered more than they promised, on time and within budget.   We could not have been happier with their personnel, products and services.  Highly recommended!

I've changed my review from a 1 star to a 4 stars. Matt Stone got right on a pretty poor job done installing a skylight. He had his guys remove the skylight, move it, repair the roof and inside ceiling to its original state, paint it, repair some external trim that was damaged, and all within a few days after talking to him about the multiple problems. It was really an eyesore from the inside. I'd give a 5 star if this had been done well the first time. The skylight just didn't fit the space I first wanted it and was told it would. More communication about the potential problems might have allowed this to be done right the first time. But, Pressure Point Roofing gets 5 starts for making amends and correcting a pretty ugly problem, very fast! Thank you.

I needed someone to come out to take a look at a leaky roof. I contacted Pressure Point Roofing, Inc. and they came out the same day. They gave me a quote to fix the problem and I agreed to their terms. It was about 4PM and I knew they closed at 5PM but they stayed and fixed the leak at no additional cost. I was very happy and impressed. Would recommend them to anyone. Thank you Pressure Point Roofing for earning our families trust. Will definitely be doing business with you again.

Wouldn't be good if I didn't think the best of my own company right?!

Matt Stone

I am so happy I chose Pressure Point to replace my 40-year-old roof.  The crew was professional, efficient, and answered all my questions, addressed the few concerns I raised, and made me feel comfortable, trusting them with such a big project.  I couldn't be happier with their work and the look of my new roof.
