4 Safety Features Every Deck Should Have

The deck remains a must-have feature in Oregon homes because of the increased comfort, functionality and value it provides. If you’re having one installed this season, it’s not enough that your new decking is lovely and well-designed. It should be safe to use and spend time in as well. Here are some of the safety features your deck should have.

4 Safety Features Every Deck Should Have
  1. Railings
If your deck is built 30 inches from the ground (or higher), you’ll want to make sure it has railings to prevent anyone from tumbling off the structure. The railings themselves should be at least 3 feet high and can reach the waist of an average person. Aside from keeping the deck safe, the railings can effectively head off animals that may have gotten into your backyard, stopping them from reaching the deck.
  1. Sealants
Bare wooden boards can give a nice, rustic look to your deck, but you might want to have them thoroughly sealed and coated. That’s because bare deck boards tend to splinter, and if you’re the type who likes walking barefoot on the deck surface – well, you know what can happen. There are other good reasons to seal and coat your deck. For one thing, this makes the deck easier to clean and maintain. Plus, the sealants help prevent mold and bacteria from building up on the boards.
  1. Ample Lighting
With good lighting design, you can set a nice, relaxing mood to your deck. But more importantly, it allows you to navigate the structure safely and with ease at nighttime.
  1. Ledger Board
The deck is either attached or detached to the home. If your deck is the former, it will need a ledger board, which refers to the horizontal lumber beam connecting the deck with your home’s exterior wall. The ledger board provides the structural strength the deck needs to stay solid and intact.

Client Reviews

I just wanna give a shout out to one of your guys who jumped out of vehicle to help me push my van out from 62 onto coker Butte this morning awesome job and thank you so much..

No hassles, no stress roofing contractor.

We've worked with a number of contractors over the years doing home improvement projects and I can say that, without question, working with Pressure Point was about as easy as it gets.

Everything about the project, from sales all the way to final inspection, went like clockwork and without a hitch.  They delivered more than they promised, on time and within budget.   We could not have been happier with their personnel, products and services.  Highly recommended!

I've changed my review from a 1 star to a 4 stars. Matt Stone got right on a pretty poor job done installing a skylight. He had his guys remove the skylight, move it, repair the roof and inside ceiling to its original state, paint it, repair some external trim that was damaged, and all within a few days after talking to him about the multiple problems. It was really an eyesore from the inside. I'd give a 5 star if this had been done well the first time. The skylight just didn't fit the space I first wanted it and was told it would. More communication about the potential problems might have allowed this to be done right the first time. But, Pressure Point Roofing gets 5 starts for making amends and correcting a pretty ugly problem, very fast! Thank you.

I needed someone to come out to take a look at a leaky roof. I contacted Pressure Point Roofing, Inc. and they came out the same day. They gave me a quote to fix the problem and I agreed to their terms. It was about 4PM and I knew they closed at 5PM but they stayed and fixed the leak at no additional cost. I was very happy and impressed. Would recommend them to anyone. Thank you Pressure Point Roofing for earning our families trust. Will definitely be doing business with you again.

Wouldn't be good if I didn't think the best of my own company right?!

Matt Stone

Excellent experience, prompt and professional estimate, showed up on schedule (actually a day early) and did a thorough and complete job. All personnel were professional, polite and great at their jobs. Would recommend to anyone.

I am so happy I chose Pressure Point to replace my 40-year-old roof.  The crew was professional, efficient, and answered all my questions, addressed the few concerns I raised, and made me feel comfortable, trusting them with such a big project.  I couldn't be happier with their work and the look of my new roof.
